In a remarkable development, the Election Commission of India (EC) has achieved the highest-ever cash seizures in the history of Lok Sabha elections. Even before the commencement of polling, enforcement authorities have confiscated an astounding ₹4,650 crore. This substantial amount surpasses the total seizures made during the entire 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign.

Unprecedented Seizures by Election Commission

  • Daily Seizures: Authorities have been making daily seizures averaging ₹100 crore since March 1, 2024, as part of their efforts to curb electoral malpractices and ensure a level playing field for all parties in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
  • Drugs and Freebies: Notably, the seizure of drugs and freebies has seen a significant increase compared to the 2019 general elections. The poll panel has confiscated drugs worth ₹2,068.8 crore, whereas in 2019, the corresponding figure was ₹1,279.9 crore.
  • States Leading the Seizures: Among the states, Rajasthan leads the list with approximately ₹778 crore seized, followed by Gujarat with ₹605 crore, and Maharashtra with about ₹431 crore2.

High-Stakes Lok Sabha Elections

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are high-stakes, with voting taking place in seven phases. The first phase begins on April 19, and the counting of votes is scheduled for June 4. States participating in the initial phase include Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry1.

The Election Commission’s relentless efforts to maintain transparency and integrity during the electoral process are commendable. As citizens, we eagerly await the outcome of this historic election, hoping for a fair and democratic representation of our collective voice.
