The Southwest monsoon has made a swift and steady advance over parts of Pune, Mumbai, and a majority of the geographical areas of Maharashtra. This year, the monsoon onset over Mumbai and Pune occurred two days ahead of its normal date of June 11.
Key Highlights of Monsoon in Maharashtra:
- Early Onset: The monsoon arrived early this season, continuing the trend observed since its onset on May 30.
- Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM): With the latest advancement, the NLM now passes through Thane, Ahmednagar, Beed, Nizamabad, Sukma, Malkangiri, Vizianagaram, and Islampur.
- Widespread Heavy Rainfall: Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra have been experiencing widespread heavy rainfall in recent days.
- Red Alert: A ‘red’ alert has been issued, predicting extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204 mm in 24 hours) over coastal Karnataka, Konkan, and Madhya Maharashtra until Monday.
- Pune Records Third Wettest June Day: On Sunday, Pune (Shivajinagar) recorded 117 mm of rainfall, becoming the third wettest June day since 1969. Thunder and heavy downpour also affected large parts of Mumbai, inundating major roads and underpasses.
- Northeast India and Heatwave Conditions: Northeast India is bracing for extremely heavy rainfall during June 10-13. Meanwhile, heatwave conditions persist in North and Northwest India where the monsoon is yet to arrive1.
The IMD forecasts continued heavy rainfall throughout the week for these regions. The “orange alert” will remain in effect until at least Tuesday, urging residents to be cautious as monsoon activity persists.
