In a significant development, Bibhav Kumar, the main accused in the Swati Maliwal assault case, has been remanded in judicial custody for four days by a Delhi court. The incident has drawn attention due to its connection with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the alleged assault on AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal.

Background

The case revolves around an alleged incident that occurred on May 13, when Swati Maliwal visited Arvind Kejriwal’s residence. According to the FIR filed by Maliwal, Bibhav Kumar misbehaved with her during the meeting. The Delhi Police later added another charge to the FIR: destruction of evidence.

Arrest and Investigation of Bibhav Kumar

Bibhav Kumar, who has long been associated with Arvind Kejriwal, was arrested from the Chief Minister’s home on May 18. The police took him to the scene of the alleged assault at Kejriwal’s residence to recreate the crime. During interrogation, Kumar was questioned about his presence at the Chief Minister’s home five days after the incident. Investigators also probed his relationship with Swati Maliwal.

The police have seized Kumar’s phone and the CCTV recorder recovered from Kejriwal’s home. These items will undergo forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are currently reviewing hours of footage from eight CCTV cameras to piece together the events leading up to the alleged assault.

Court Proceedings

Bibhav Kumar was produced before Delhi’s Tis Hazari court, where the police sought four-day judicial custody. The court granted this request, sending Kumar to jail until May 2812. His previous police custody had ended, prompting the shift to judicial custody.

The case has drawn attention not only due to the high-profile individuals involved but also because it sheds light on issues related to women’s safety and accountability. As the investigation continues, the judicial proceedings will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of this case.
