Google Pixels haven’t always been perfect, occasionally suffering from fundamental issues that persisted across several generations. From outdated camera sensors to the lack of ultrawide cameras and uniform bezels, Google addressed these concerns over time. Now, the Pixel 9 series aims to fix another long-standing problem: the slightly slow and sometimes unreliable under-display fingerprint sensor.
Thanks to a reliable source, Android Authority has learned that Google plans to incorporate an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in its upcoming Pixel 9 devices. This move is a significant upgrade from the previous optical scanners used in the Pixel 6 series. The switch to ultrasonic technology promises faster and more reliable unlocking experiences.
The Problem with Optical Scanners
The Pixel 6 series introduced under-display fingerprint scanners, but early users reported issues with unlock speeds and scanning reliability. The choice of an optical scanner from Goodix contributed to these problems. Optical scanners tend to be slower, less accurate, and sensitive to moisture or dirt on the finger. Additionally, they require the screen to flash a bright light during scanning, which can be inconvenient in low-light environments.
The Ultrasonic Solution
With the Pixel 9, Google is finally making the switch to an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. Specifically, they’re using Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008), the same model found in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Samsung’s devices have demonstrated excellent fingerprint scanner performance, making this a positive development for Pixel enthusiasts.
What to Expect from Pixel 9 Series
The new ultrasonic fingerprint scanner will be featured in all variants of the Pixel 9 series except the Fold, which retains its fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button. Google has confirmed that the Pixel 9 series will debut on August 13, so the wait won’t be long.
