Sandeshkhali Case: Supreme Court Halts Lok Sabha Panel Proceedings Against Bengal Officials on BJP MP Complaint

sandeshkhali case

In a significant development, the Supreme Court has intervened to halt the proceedings initiated by the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee against key officials in West Bengal. The committee had issued a notice summoning the Chief Secretary and other officers following a complaint lodged by BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar. The complaint alleged “misconduct, brutality, and life-threatening injuries” against the MP.

Background of Sandeshkhali case

The controversy stems from an incident in Sandeshkhali, where Mr. Majumdar was injured during a protest. The demonstration was in response to alleged systematic exploitation and sexual assault against women, with the accused being linked to the ruling party, TMC.

Court’s Intervention

bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud took cognizance of the matter and stayed the proceedings before the Privileges Committee. The court’s decision came after senior advocates Kapil Sibal and AM Singhvi urgently brought it to their attention.

The Allegations

The BJP MP’s complaint raised serious concerns about the conduct of state officials. The Lok Sabha Privileges Committee had summoned the West Bengal Chief SecretaryDirector General of Police (DGP), and other officers to respond to the allegations. However, the Supreme Court’s intervention has temporarily halted these proceedings.

Implications

The stay order by the Supreme Court ensures that the officials need not appear before the Privileges Committee on the scheduled date, which was February 19, 2024. The court’s decision provides relief to the accused officers and allows for a more thorough examination of the allegations.

Conclusion

As the legal battle unfolds, the nation watches closely. The delicate balance between parliamentary privileges and individual rights remains at the forefront, and the Supreme Court’s intervention will undoubtedly shape the course of this high-stakes case.
