In a landmark event for Indian Railways, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed the prototype of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train at Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML)’s Bengaluru facility. This new addition to the Vande Bharat series marks a significant milestone in the country’s rail transportation, promising a world-class travel experience for long-distance overnight journeys.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset, designed and manufactured by BEML, showcases advanced features and state-of-the-art technology. Capable of speeds up to 200 km/h, the train is set to offer a premium alternative for long-distance travel, rivaling the current Rajdhani Express1. The train will have 16 coaches, including 11 AC three-tier, four AC two-tier, and one AC first-class, with a total of 823 berths2.
During the launch event, Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the dedication and expertise of BEML’s leadership and engineers, stating, “This is a historic moment for the country. The much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper trainset is now set to run on Indian Railways tracks, providing our people with a world-class travel experience and best-in-class amenities”2.
Features of Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains:
The train features several passenger-friendly amenities, such as hot water showers in the first AC coach, ergonomically designed odor-free toilets, automatic passenger doors, and integrated reading lights with USB cable provisions2. Additionally, it includes special berths and toilets for disabled passengers, ensuring inclusivity and comfort for all travelers2.
Safety has been a paramount consideration in the design of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train. Constructed from austenitic stainless steel, the train is equipped with advanced crash-proof elements, including specially designed crash buffers and couplers. All materials and components used in the train adhere to the highest fire safety standards, meeting the stringent EN45545 HL3 grade requirements2.
The first Vande Bharat Sleeper train is expected to be operational by the end of the year, following a series of trials and testing2. This launch is part of a broader initiative to modernize India’s railway infrastructure and enhance passenger experience.
In addition to revealing the trains, Minister Vaishnaw also inaugurated a new 9.2-acre hangar facility near BEML’s Bengaluru plant, dedicated to the export of standard and broad-gauge rolling stock2. This facility is expected to further expand BEML’s global reach and contribute to India’s growing presence in the international rail market.
