Godrej Family Announces Split After 127 Years: Who Gets What

godrej family

The venerable Godrej Group, a stalwart in India’s corporate landscape for over a century, has decided to part ways after 127 years of shared history. The split, characterized as an “ownership realignment,” reflects the differing visions of the Godrej family members. Here’s what we know:

The Split Among Godrej Family

The Godrej Group, with interests spanning from soaps and home appliances to real estate, will now be divided into two distinct branches:

  1. Godrej Industries Group (GIG):
    • Adi Godrej (82) and his brother Nadir Godrej (73) will retain control over Godrej Industries Group. This branch encompasses five publicly listed firms:
      • Godrej Industries
      • Godrej Consumer Products
      • Godrej Properties
      • Godrej Agrovet
      • Astec Lifesciences
    • Pirojsha Godrej (42), Adi’s son, will serve as the Executive Vice Chairperson of GIG and is slated to succeed Nadir as the chairperson in August 2026.
  1. Godrej Enterprises Group:
    • Cousins Jamshyd Godrej (75) and Smita Godrej Crishna (74) will lead this unlisted branch. Their portfolio includes:
      • Godrej & Boyce, along with its affiliates
      • A substantial land bank, including prime property in Mumbai (totaling 3,400 acres)
    • Nyrika Holkar (42), Smita’s daughter, assumes the role of Executive Director within Godrej Enterprises Group.

The Vision

In a statement, the Godrej family emphasized that this split was executed with respect and mindfulness. It aims to enhance strategic direction, focus, and agility while creating long-term value for shareholders and stakeholders. Both branches will continue to use the Godrej brand, reinforcing their shared heritage.

A Legacy of Innovation

The Godrej saga began in 1897 when Ardeshir Godrej, a lawyer-turned-serial entrepreneur, and his brother ventured into locksmithing after earlier ventures in hand-fashioned medical devices faltered. Ardeshir, who had no children, passed the baton to his younger brother Pirojsha. Pirojsha, in turn, had four children: SohrabDosaBurjor, and Naval.

The split marks a significant chapter in the Godrej legacy, but it also underscores the family’s commitment to growth and adaptation. One thing is certain: the Godrej name, synonymous with quality and trust, will endure across both realms1. 🌟
