Asian Champions Trophy: India beat China 1-0 to clinch record fifth title

asian champions trophy

In a thrilling finale to the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy, India emerged victorious against China with a narrow 1-0 win, securing their record-extending fifth title. The match, held at the Moqi Hockey Training Base, saw a tense battle between the two teams, with Jugraj Singh scoring the decisive goal in the 51st minute.

India, the defending champions, faced a resilient Chinese side that kept them at bay for most of the match. Despite dominating possession and creating multiple scoring opportunities, the Indian team struggled to break through China’s solid defense. Captain Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates made several attempts, but it was Jugraj Singh who finally found the back of the net, thanks to an assist from Harmanpreet.

The victory marks India’s fifth title in the Asian Champions Trophy, having previously won in 2011, 2016, 2018 (shared with Pakistan), and 2023. This win also solidifies India’s position as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.

Highlights of Asian Champions Trophy Final

  • First Quarter: India started strong, with Harmanpreet Singh threatening from penalty corners, but China’s goalkeeper Wang Weihao made crucial saves to keep the scoreline level.
  • Second Quarter: India continued to press, but missed opportunities and a resilient Chinese defense ensured the teams went into halftime goalless.
  • Third Quarter: China won three penalty corners but failed to convert, thanks to India’s solid defensive efforts led by Amit Rohidas.
  • Fourth Quarter: Jugraj Singh’s goal in the 51st minute broke the deadlock, and India held on to their lead despite China’s late offensive efforts.

Player of the Tournament

Harmanpreet Singh got the Player of the Tournament award, finishing as India’s leading goal-scorer with seven goals, including two field goals and five penalty corners2. His leadership and crucial assists were instrumental in India’s successful campaign.

Looking Ahead

With this victory, India has set a high benchmark for future tournaments. The team’s performance in the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 showcases their potential and determination to remain at the top of Asian hockey.
