Shanghai is on high alert as Typhoon Bebinca, potentially the most powerful storm to hit the city since 1949, approaches. Authorities have taken extensive precautionary measures, including the cancellation of hundreds of flights and the suspension of various transportation services.
Transportation and Tourism Impacted by Typhoon Bebinca
In anticipation of the typhoon, Shanghai has suspended all flights at its two major airports, Hongqiao and Pudong, starting from 8 p.m. local time on Sunday. This decision affects over 600 flights, causing significant disruptions for travelers. Additionally, the Shanghai railway station has halted certain services to ensure passenger safety.
Tourist attractions such as Shanghai Disney Resort, Jinjiang Amusement Park, and Shanghai Wild Animal Park have been temporarily closed. Ferry services to and from Chongming Island have also been suspended.
Emergency Measures and Warnings
The China Meteorological Administration has issued a red alert, warning of strong winds and heavy rainfall in eastern China. Typhoon Bebinca, a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained wind speeds of around 144 kph (89 mph), is expected to make landfall along China’s eastern coast after midnight on Monday.
In neighboring Zhejiang province, ships have been recalled to port, and several parks in Hangzhou have announced closures in preparation for the storm. The Ministry of Water Resources has issued a Level-IV emergency response to address potential flooding risks in Shanghai and the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui.
Historical Context and Precautions
Shanghai faced a storm of this magnitude was in 1949, when Typhoon Gloria struck with similar wind speeds. Although Shanghai is generally spared from intense typhoons that affect China, the city is not taking chances with Typhoon Bebinca.
As Shanghai braces for the storm, residents are advised to stay indoors and follow updates from local authorities. The city’s preparedness and swift response aim to minimize the impact of what could be a historic weather event.
