Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has ramped up its health and safety protocols in response to the recent Mpox outbreak. The airport has established monkeypox testing kiosks for international passengers, particularly those arriving from African countries.
Mandatory Testing and Quarantine in Airport
All international passengers arriving at Bengaluru airport are now required to undergo screening for the Mpox virus. Those who test positive will face a mandatory 21-day quarantine and isolation period2. This measure is reminiscent of the COVID-19 pandemic protocols, aimed at curbing the spread of infectious diseases3.
Health and Safety Measures in Airport
A spokesperson for Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) stated, “KIA is fully prepared and compliant with all health and safety protocols issued by relevant authorities in light of the global Mpox situation. All international passengers arriving at the airport are being thoroughly checked for elevated temperatures as part of the screening process”.
Current Situation in India
So far, India has reported one confirmed case of Mpox. A 26-year-old man from Haryana was admitted to LNJP hospital after showing symptoms. His health condition is currently stable1. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a public health emergency on August 14, 20241.
Public Health Advisory
Health experts emphasize the importance of isolation, infection control, and monitoring for outbreaks to prevent the spread of Mpox. The virus, initially identified in primates, can be transmitted to humans through direct contact with infected animals or person-to-person contact with bodily fluids, respiratory droplets, or contaminated materials2.
While these enhanced safety protocols may cause some inconvenience for travelers, the health and safety of the community remain the utmost priority. By enforcing robust testing and quarantine guidelines, Bengaluru Airport aims to reduce the risk of Mpox spreading and avert a larger outbreak3. The airport authorities are working closely with health officials to monitor the situation and adjust measures as needed.
