Centre Issues Directive Amid Mpox Outbreak: Key Symptoms to Watch For

mpox

In response to the recent Mpox outbreak, the Indian government has issued a directive to all states and union territories, emphasizing the need for heightened surveillance, testing, and contact tracing. The directive comes as part of a broader effort to prevent the spread of the virus and ensure public health safety.

Government Measures

Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra has urged states to enhance their screening and testing measures. Instructions given to hospitals to prepare isolation facilities for treating both suspected and confirmed Mpox cases1. The directive also calls for a review of public health preparedness by senior officials to ensure a swift and effective response.

Symptoms of Mpox

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the most common symptoms of Mpox include:

  • Rash: This can be symmetrical or genital, often appearing as painful lesions.
  • Fever: A high temperature is typically one of the first signs.
  • Other Symptoms: These may include swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, and fatigue.

The WHO has declared the Mpox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), noting that the risk of spread beyond Africa is moderate.

Transmission and Prevention

Mpox is primarily transmitted through close contact with an infected person, including skin-to-skin contact with rashes or through saliva and mucus. It can also spread via contaminated materials such as clothing or bedding2. Sexual contact is a significant mode of transmission globally, particularly among men who have sex with men1.

To prevent the spread of Mpox, the government advises the public to practice good hygiene, avoid close contact with infected individuals, and seek medical attention if symptoms appear. Health officials also recommend vaccination for those who have been in contact with infected persons.

Public Reassurance

The Health Ministry has reassured the public that there is no cause for undue concern. The ministry emphasizes the importance of timely reporting and preventive measures to control the outbreak3.
