In a significant development, China has finally sent an Ambassador to India after an 18-month hiatus. Veteran diplomat Xu Feihong arrived in New Delhi on Friday to assume his duties as the 17th Chinese Ambassador.

Xu Feihong: Strengthening Ties and Cooperation

Xu Feihong arrived in New Delhi along with his wife, Tan Yuxiu. Speaking to the media, Xu emphasized the need for cooperation over competition between India and China. He expressed his commitment to finding mutually acceptable solutions to specific issues through dialogue at an early date. Xu, who has previously served as China’s Ambassador to Afghanistan and Romania, considers his posting in New Delhi as an “honorable mission and a sacred duty” to improve bilateral ties.

A Positive Outlook

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also acknowledged the importance of India-China relations. Xu echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the boundary question should not define the entirety of the relationship. He highlighted the need to focus on friendship and cooperation, even amidst differences. Xu expressed optimism about receiving support and assistance from the Indian government and various sectors as he carries out his ambassadorial duties.

Global Challenges and Cooperation

Xu Feihong underscored the importance of closer communication and coordination on global and regional affairs. As the world faces challenges such as climate change, food crises, and economic recovery, cooperation between India and China can contribute to stability and positivity in international relations2.

This appointment marks a crucial step in bridging the gap between the two Asian giants and fostering dialogue for mutual benefit. Xu Feihong’s arrival in New Delhi signals renewed efforts to strengthen India-China ties and find common ground on pressing issues.  It remains to be seen if this renewed diplomatic engagement will lead to a thaw in relations between the two Asian giants.
