Indian-Origin Sikh Builder Shot Dead in Canada’s Edmonton

In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, an Indian-origin builder and a civil engineer were shot dead at a construction site in Edmonton. The victims have been identified as Buta Singh Gill, a prominent figure in the Sikh community, and another man whose identity remains undisclosed.

The Victims:

  1. Buta Singh Gill: A respected construction company owner, Gill was also the president of the Sikh Temple. His strong ties to the Punjabi community made him a well-known and influential personality in Edmonton. Gill owned Gill Built Homes Ltd., a luxury home building company in the city.
  2. Sarabjeet Singh: The civil engineer, Sarabjeet Singh, was also targeted in the shooting. He is currently fighting for his life in a hospital, battling serious injuries sustained during the attack.

The Incident:

According to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), the tragic event unfolded around 12:00 pm on April 8, 2024, at a construction site in the area of Cavanagh Boulevard Southwest and Cherniak Way Southwest in South Edmonton. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded swiftly, but unfortunately, both Buta Singh Gill and the unidentified man were pronounced dead at the scene. Sarabjeet Singh was seriously injured and rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Community in Mourning:

The Edmonton community, especially the Sikh community, is grieving the loss of Buta Singh Gill. His contributions to the city’s development and his active involvement in the Sikh temple have left an indelible mark. Edmontonians are coming together to honor the memory of these two individuals and to support Sarabjeet Singh’s recovery.

Investigation Ongoing:

Authorities are actively investigating the incident, and details surrounding the motive and the identity of the assailant remain undisclosed. The Edmonton Police Service urges anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation.
