Tragedy struck the city of Hyderabad as heavy rainfall led to the collapse of a retaining wall at an under-construction apartment site in the Bachupally area. The incident resulted in the loss of seven lives, including that of a four-year-old child. Here are the details:

What Happened in Hyderabad

On Tuesday evening, the sudden downpour caused the retaining wall to give way, crashing onto an adjacent labor camp. Among the victims were migrant workers from Odisha and Chhattisgarh. The deceased included a woman and an eight-year-old girl. The tragedy highlights the vulnerability of those working in the construction industry during adverse weather conditions.

Recovery Efforts in Hyderabad

The victims’ bodies were recovered from under the debris on Wednesday morning. The police and disaster relief teams worked tirelessly to locate and retrieve the deceased. The injured were also attended to promptly, emphasizing the importance of swift response during such emergencies.

Heavy Rainfall in Telangana

Several parts of Telangana have been experiencing heavy rainfall since Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘yellow’ alert for the state, indicating moderate to light rainfall. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation deployed Disaster Relief Force (DRF) teams to address water stagnation and fallen trees across the city.

Heatwave Conditions in Other Parts of India

While Hyderabad faced heavy rain, other parts of India grappled with scorching heatwave conditions. Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh recorded temperatures exceeding 44 degrees Celsius. In Delhi, the mercury soared to 42 degrees Celsius, marking the highest maximum temperature of the season. Health warnings were issued, and some states suspended in-person classes in schools, urging government employees to work from home2.

As the monsoon season progresses, authorities must remain vigilant to prevent further accidents and mitigate the impact of extreme weather events. Our thoughts go out to the families of the victims, and we hope for swift recovery for those injured in this tragic incident.
