Maldivian Politician Mariyam Shiuna Apologizes for Disrespectful Indian Flag Post

Mariyam Shiuna

Mariyam Shiuna, a prominent Maldivian politician, has issued a public apology following a controversy surrounding a now-deleted social media post that was perceived as disrespectful towards the Indian National Flag. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and discussions about diplomatic sensitivity.

The Controversial Post of Mariyam Shiuna

The post in question featured a campaign poster from an opposition party, seemingly adorned with the Ashok Chakra, which is commonly seen on the white central band of the Indian flag. The image was swiftly taken down after it triggered backlash and public outcry.

The Backlash and Apology

Mariyam Shiuna, who is known for her active presence on social media, faced intense criticism from both Maldivian and Indian audiences. The post was interpreted as a deliberate slight against India, a close neighbor and ally. The Ashok Chakra, a navy blue-colored wheel with 24 spokes, holds deep significance in Indian symbolism and represents the eternal law of dharma.

In her official apology, Shiuna expressed regret for any misunderstanding caused by the content of her post. She clarified that the resemblance to the Indian flag was entirely unintentional and emphasized the mutual respect that Maldives shares with India. Her statement read:

“I extend my sincerest apologies for any confusion or offense caused by the content of my recent post. It was brought to my attention that the image used in my response to the Maldivian opposition party MDP bore a resemblance to the Indian flag. I want to make it clear that this was entirely unintentional, and I sincerely regret any misunderstanding it may have caused. Maldives deeply values its relationship with India, and in the future, I will be more vigilant in verifying the content I share to prevent such oversights.”
