17 Pilgrims Killed, Over 30 Injured in Truck Crash in Balochistan, Pakistan

balochistan

A tragic accident in Balochistan, Pakistan, has claimed the lives of at least 17 pilgrims and injured over 30 others. The incident occurred late Wednesday night in the Hub district when a truck carrying pilgrims on their way to a Sufi shrine plunged into a ravine.

Initial reports suggest the cause of the accident may have been speeding. The pilgrims were reportedly traveling to the Shah Noorani shrine in Khuzdar district.

Rescue Efforts and Investigation

Rescue teams rushed to the scene and took nearly two hours to extricate victims. The injured were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The truck driver, Karim Baksh, was also injured and was arrested by police as investigations into the crash continue.

Balochistan Chief Minister Offers Condolences

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti expressed his deep grief over the loss of life and directed officials to provide the best possible medical care to the injured.

Deadly Road Accidents a Recurring Issue

This accident highlights the ongoing problem of deadly road accidents in Pakistan. Poor road conditions, a lack of safety awareness, and disregard for traffic rules are all contributing factors.

This tragedy comes just months after a speeding van crash in Balochistan killed 22 people, including women and children.

The Pakistani government is under pressure to address these issues and improve road safety standards to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Previous Incidents

  • In January 2023, a passenger bus, laden with containers of flammable oil, plunged into a ravine in Balochistan province, claiming the lives of 41 people.
  • In August of the same year, a train derailment in southern Sindh province resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people and left dozens injured.
  • In 2022, a speeding van veered off a narrow mountain road near Quetta in Balochistan, leading to the tragic demise of 22 passengers, including women and children.

As Pakistan mourns, authorities must redouble their efforts to enhance road safety and prevent such heartrending incidents from recurring. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims during this difficult time.
