PM Modi Announces Rs 100 Cut in LPG Cylinder Price on Women’s Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a significant announcement today, bringing relief to millions of households across the country. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, PM Modi declared a Rs 100 reduction in the LPG Cylinder Price. This move is expected to ease the financial burden on nearly 33 crore domestic consumers who rely on LPG for cooking.

Impact on Households

With this price reduction, the standard 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder will now cost:

  • Delhi: Rs 803
  • Mumbai: Rs 802.50
  • Kolkata: Rs 829
  • Chennai: Rs 818.50

For the 10 crore poor households covered under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), this cut in LPG prices is in addition to the existing subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder. The PMUY aims to provide clean cooking fuel to economically disadvantaged families, and this move further supports their well-being.

Empowering Women

In his statement, PM Modi emphasized the significance of this decision on Women’s Day. He said, “Today, on Women’s Day, our Government has decided to reduce LPG cylinder prices by Rs. 100. This will significantly ease the financial burden on millions of households across the country, especially benefiting our Nari Shakti (women power). By making cooking gas more affordable, we also aim to support the well-being of families and ensure a healthier environment. This is in line with our commitment to empowering women and ensuring ‘Ease of Living’ for them.”

Fiscal Context

This marks the second instance of the government announcing a reduction in LPG prices for households during the current fiscal year. Additionally, the government had decided to provide 75 lakh additional PMUY connections, taking the total beneficiaries under the scheme to 10.35 crore. In October, the PMUY subsidy was further increased by 50% to Rs 300 per cylinder.

The recent price reduction comes after the Union Cabinet approved the continuation of the PMUY subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder for the financial year 2024-25 (FY25), estimated to cost Rs 12,000 crore.

As households celebrate this relief, the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable and accessible LPG remains a priority. The reduction in LPG cylinder prices not only impacts budgets but also contributes to a cleaner and healthier environment.
