Kabosu, the Shiba Inu that became a global sensation as the face of the Doge meme, has passed away. The news was confirmed by her owner, Atsuko Sato, in a heartfelt blog post. Kabosu, who was 17 years old, had been unwell for some time.

Iconic Meme and Cryptocurrency Inspiration

The iconic image of Kabosu, captured in 2010 and adorned with Comic Sans text, went viral in 2013, becoming one of the most recognizable memes on the internet. Beyond her meme fame, Kabosu also inspired the creation of the cryptocurrency called Dogecoin. Her endearing expression and quirky captions made her a beloved figure in internet culture.

Farewell to Kabosu

A farewell party will be held on Sunday, May 26, at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City. The dog’s name was Kabosu. Dogecoin paid tribute to the dog on social media, acknowledging the profound impact the dog had on their community and the world. In a heartfelt tweet, Dogecoin said:

“Today Kabosu, our community’s shared friend and inspiration, peacefully passed in the arms of her person. The impact this one dog has made across the world is immeasurable. She was a being who knew only happiness and limitless love. Please keep her spirit and her family in your heart, and most importantly carry her with you as your story continues – we are all fortunate for hers to have touched and shaped ours.”

In honor of Kabosu’s passing, Dogecoin decided to drop a limited NFT collection they had planned to release. Instead of making the mint paid, they released all 5000 NFTs for free (only pay gas costs).

Social media users expressed their grief and shared memories of Kabosu. One user tweeted:
