Shankar IAS Academy Penalized ₹ 5 Lakh for Deceptive UPSC Result Ads

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a fine of ₹ 5 lakh on Shankar IAS Academy for issuing misleading advertisements related to the UPSC Civil Service Exam 2022 results. On Sunday, they announced the decision to protect consumer rights and ensure transparency in advertising.

The CCPA’s investigation revealed that Shankar IAS Academy’s advertisements claimed 336 selections out of 933 at the All India Level, including 40 candidates in the Top 100 and 42 candidates from Tamil Nadu. However, the academy failed to disclose that many of these successful candidates had only participated in free or minimal-cost programs, such as the Free Interview Guidance Programme and various test series, rather than the paid courses prominently advertised.

Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare emphasized the importance of truthful and honest representation in advertisements, especially those targeting UPSC aspirants. “Such advertisements must contain clear and prominent information to avoid misleading consumers,” she stated.

The CCPA’s action underscores its commitment to enforcing the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which prohibits false or misleading advertisements.

In response, Shankar IAS Academy has submitted details of the successful candidates, but the CCPA found discrepancies in the advertised claims. The academy’s failure to disclose the nature of the courses taken by the successful candidates was deemed a deliberate attempt to mislead consumers into purchasing their paid courses3.

This penalty serves as a reminder to all educational institutions to uphold ethical standards in their advertising practices, ensuring that aspirants receive accurate information to make informed decisions about their education and career paths.
