North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has recently overseen a test of domestically-developed attack drones, according to state media KCNA. The test involved a white drone with X-shaped tails and wings, which successfully destroyed a target resembling South Korea’s K-2 main battle tank. The development of these “suicide drones” is a significant step in North Korea’s military modernization efforts.
Kim Jong Un visited the Drone Institute of North Korea’s Academy of Defense Science, where he emphasized the importance of drones in modern warfare. He called for accelerated development and production of various drone systems, including:
- Exploding Drones for Infantry and Special Operations Units: These drones are designed for tactical strikes and reconnaissance.
- Multi-Purpose Attack Drones: Versatile drones capable of various missions.
- Underwater Suicide Attack Drones: A novel addition to North Korea’s arsenal.
The move comes amid rising tensions with Washington and Seoul. Pyongyang has been ramping up its tactical warfare capabilities, focusing on short-range missiles and heavy artillery aimed at striking South Korea. This development follows North Korea’s advancements in longer-range ballistic missiles and nuclear programs, despite international sanctions.
The United States and South Korean militaries are currently conducting joint exercises to enhance their combined capabilities in defending against North Korean threats. The drills continue until Thursday.
Kim Jong Un’s interest in drone technology underscores the evolving landscape of military strategies, where unmanned aerial systems play a crucial role. As North Korea continues to invest in its military capabilities, the world watches closely to assess the implications of these new “suicide drones.”
