Nainital Forest Fires: Army Called in as Over 33 Hectares Destroyed

nainital

A relentless inferno has engulfed the serene landscapes of Nainital, leaving behind a trail of destruction. As the flames continue to rage for over 36 hours, the Indian Air Force and Army have been pressed into action to combat the forest fires that threaten both wildlife habitats and human settlements.

The Blaze Unleashed in Nainital

The fire, which initially broke out in the forest near Nainital district headquarters, has now spread perilously close to the residential High Court Colony situated in the Pines area. An old and vacant house near The Pines has already fallen victim to the flames, raising concerns about the safety of nearby buildings. Efforts are underway to control the fire, but the situation remains critical.

Widespread Devastation in Nainital

In the past 24 hours, 31 new incidents of forest fire have been reported from various parts of Uttarakhand, resulting in the destruction of 33.34 hectares of precious forest land. The Kumaon region alone witnessed 26 incidents, while the Garhwal region recorded 5 incidents. The toll on the environment is staggering, with lush greenery reduced to ashes.

Urgent Measures

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has vowed to bring the fires under control. The Army has been summoned to assist, and helicopters are actively engaged in firefighting efforts. A meeting with officials in Haldwani is scheduled to address the forest fire crisis. Meanwhile, the district administration has taken preventive steps, including banning boating in the iconic Naini Lake to curb the spread of the inferno.

Arrests Made

In a bid to prevent further arson, authorities have apprehended three individuals for allegedly starting fires in separate areas of Jakholi and Rudraprayag. The state has already witnessed 575 incidents of forest fires since November 1 last year, affecting nearly 690 hectares of forest area and incurring significant losses1.

As the battle against the flames intensifies, the people of Nainital remain on edge, hoping for swift containment and the preservation of their natural heritage. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, and concerted efforts are underway to protect what remains of Uttarakhand’s pristine forests.🔥🌲🙏
